What Is Gear?

When you think of gears, what do you imagine? A machine with many teeth that are turning against each other? A set of metal rings that have a different number of teeth and fit together to make the motion smoother or faster? You are not too far off. Gears are one of the oldest parts in machines and they play an important role for making things work.

Gears can be used in any type of machinery, but they tend to show up more often as part of larger systems where there is a need for power transmission. They can also be found on bicycles, watches, clocks, printers and just about anything else with moving parts! In order to understand how these devices work it's important first know how gear ratios work.

What Are Gears Uses?

Gears can be used for a variety of different purposes. They are useful in situations where you need to transmit power and torque from one rotating shaft to another but there needs to be some speed reduction involved.

Where Can We Use Gears?

Gears can be found in many different machines and tools that have moving parts. Some of the more common examples include: bicycles, watches, clocks, printers and just about anything else with a motor! They are also used extensively in cars where they help to gear down the speed at which the car is going so you can get up hills much more easily.

The Principle of Gears:

The principle behind how gear works is actually very simple, but it's important for you to understand what happens when two gears mesh together.

When two gears mesh together the first thing that happens is that one gear will begin to turn and this causes a series of small teeth on it's surface (called "pinion") to contact another gear. This begins turning the second set of teeth which in turn make the large hub or wheel rotate as well, at an angle relative to where the first gear is turned. This means that if you have two gears meshing together the amount of "angular velocity" that they are both rotating at will be different - even though one may seem to turning way faster than the other when viewing them side by side.

1) Spur Gears Manufacturers & Suppliers

Our Spur gears are the most commonly used gears because they have a high degree of precision and are relatively simple to design but are a high quality gear with wide application. They have high precision and efficiency.

Spur gears are cylindrical gears with a tooth line that is straight and parallel to the shaft, and they are part of the parallel shaft gear group. Cylindrical gears are called so because of being gears with cylindrical pitch layers. There is no axial force in Spur Gears.

They are most commonly used in clocks, pumps, domestic appliances, power plants, railways, and aerospace etc.


2) Helical Gears Manufacturers & Suppliers

Our Helical gears are much like spur gears but unlike spur gears, though, Helical gears have teeth that twist around the cylindrical gear body at an angle to the gear face. Right-hand and left-hand pointed teeth are used to make helical gears, with each gear pair consisting of a right-hand and left-hand gear of the same helix angle.

A Helical gear normally use mated gear sets with parallel shafts, but they may also be used to drive non-parallel, non-intersecting axles if properly calibrated.

Usually, when two external gears are in mesh, they have the opposite rotational directions, however, Internal and external gears in mesh have the same rotational direction.

Our internal gears are driven by small external gears and because of their design allow for a compact design of the machine, thus making it convenient.

Applications of the Internal gears are in the areas of Planetary gear drive of high reduction ratios, clutches, etc.

How Is Gear Ratio Calculated?

The ratio between two gears can be calculated by taking a look at the number of teeth that are on each gear. In other words, if we have two gears with 100 total teeth and they mesh together then their ratio is going to be equal to one (because there are always an infinite amount of numbers between any two).

The next step is to divide this by the "base radius" of the gear that is rotating slower. A great example of this can be seen in an old-style analog clock with two hands and a small knob at the center (that allows you to manually adjust its speed). If we take a look at these gears up close, then we will see they both have 100 teeth but one turns much faster than the other. This means that the ratio between them is going to be equal to one and because they mesh together every 24 hours their "angular velocity" will be different in order for it all work out (the slower gear turns once per day, while the faster gear spins at a rate of 23 times per day).

How Does Gear Ratio Affect Velocity?

It's important for you to understand that when two gears mesh together the ratio between them will affect their overall velocity and this is going to be true regardless of what type of gear they are. Let's say we have a car engine with four cylinders (or "pistons") inside it which all work together as one complete assembly. If we take a look at the gears that connect the engine to its wheels then we will see they are meshing together by rotating in opposite directions.

In this situation, if you wanted each gear to turn with half of the velocity as another one there would be no way for them all mesh and work properly (in order for it all to happen smoothly). In other words, if you make the gear that meshes with your car's engine slower than it needs to be then this will affect its ability to provide torque.

If we have two gears meshing together where the first one has a "mesh ratio" of one and a half (meaning there are 150 total teeth on each) while the second gear has a mesh ratio of one (meaning there are 100 total teeth on each), then the second gear will turn twice as fast. This means that you have two gears whose velocity is different - even though they are both meshing with another gear and all three seem to be turning at exactly the same speed when viewing them side by side!
